Journal of Tourism & Arts
The Journal of Tourism & Arts is an interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and transnational journal which aims to critically analyse the relationships, tensions, representations and possibilities between tourism and all forms of the arts.
The journal is a platform for the dissemination of original research on the interface between tourism and art, from the high arts to the popular arts in their multiple expressions (e.g. visual and performing arts, digital art, photography, crafts, music, literature, cinema, street art, culinary arts). The aim is to provide a forum for researchers, PhD students, public and private organisations for contributions on the following themes (or other, related topics):
- The relationships among and between art, identity, culture, image and branding of tourist destinations, visitor experiences and host communities.
- Art as a vehicle for economic growth and/or creative innovation.
- Art as a political instrument and as a target for protests in the context of tourism.
- Tourism as a promoter of local artistic traditions in the context of globalisation and mass tourism.
- The artistic representation of tourism through the visual arts, theatre, music and literature.
- The challenges of authenticity and impacts on local cultures.
- Art festivals/events and tourism.
- Tourist art (souvenirs and other material objects).
- Museums and galleries in the context of tourism.
The Journal of Tourism & Arts is always open to submissions and publishes scientific articles (resulting from empirical research or of a more theoretical nature), systematic and/or critical literature reviews, and research reports, all subject to a rigorous double-blind review process.
The journal does not charge authors any submission or article processing fees, nor does it charge readers any access fees.
Frequency of publication
The journal has one issue per year, on a continuous flow basis. This means that articles will be published online as soon as they are ready. Articles will always have a reference to the publication date, as well as the submission and acceptance dates.
The Journal of Tourism & Arts publishes:
- Scientific articles (results of empirical research and/or of a more theoretical nature)
- Systematic and/or critical literature reviews
- Research reports

Open Access Policy
Following the principle that making scientific research freely available to all contributes to the democratisation of knowledge, all articles published in the journal are open access and are available for reading, downloading and sharing, at no cost to the author or their institution. The articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (CC BY NC SA 4.0) which allows the work to be shared, downloaded, reproduced on any platform, and adapted for non-commercial purposes, provided that it is duly cited.
Archiving Policy
For archiving purposes, the journal uses the LOCKSS programme, developed by Stanford University, to create a digital archive distributed to member libraries. This programme allows these libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for preservation and restoration purposes.
Editorial and Peer Review Policy
On submission, manuscripts are checked in the plagiarism detection systems provided by the University of Algarve to ensure that they have not been published elsewhere (Phase 1). When the work has passed this initial check, the editors assess compliance with the editorial policies, originality, scientific contribution, adequacy of methodology and linguistic quality (Phase 2). At this stage, the editors may ask the authors to improve the work and resubmit it.
Once the work has passed Phase 2, a double-blind peer review process follows, (Phase 3). Reviewers can be members of the journal’s editorial or scientific board, or other academic experts or professionals in the field of the submitted work. The anonymity of the authors of the submitted work and of the reviewers is always guaranteed.
The outcome of Phase 3 can be one of the following: accept as it is, accept with minor changes, revise and resubmit (major changes) or reject. If the submission is not rejected, the reviewers' feedback is sent to the authors so that they can revise the work based on the suggestions and recommendations of the reviewers and, if necessary, the editors (Phase 4). Once the revised version of the paper has been received, it will be sent for review once again (Phase 5). After this or subsequent rounds of reviewing, on the basis of the reviewers' opinions and a final editorial review, the editors decide whether or not to accept the paper (Phase 6).
Special Issues and Guest editors
The Journal of Tourism & Arts is open to proposals for Special Issues. Submission of proposals for Special Issues should be made directly to the journal Editors. Please consult the Guidelines for Guest Editors of a Special Issue.
Data protection
The names and e-mail addresses of journal users will be utilised exclusively for the activities of this publication (e.g. notifications of new issues or calls for papers). The Journal of Tourism & Arts does not share, sell or disclose personal information to third parties. The journal is governed by the Data Protection Policy of the University of Algarve available at www.ualg.pt.
Code of Ethics
The Journal of Tourism & Arts' code of ethics is based on the principles of transparency and good practice in academic publishing established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (2020), particularly as presented in the first chapter (pp. 11-26, 7th edition).
The journal therefore guarantees that:
- editors and reviewers are bound by the principle of confidentiality with respect to all submitted materials to which they have access (APA, 2020, p.18). This principle also implies that editors and reviewers may not, without the express consent of the authors, share or use material from any unpublished manuscript in their own or others' research (APA, 2020, p. 25).
- submissions are reviewed by qualified reviewers who confirm the absence of conflicts of interest and guarantee an impartial and rigorous evaluation process.
- “authorship” is reserved for people who make a substantial contribution to and accept responsibility for a published work (APA, 2020, p. 24), in order to discourage the existence of ghost authors and guest authors.
- practices such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication and falsification of data are strongly condemned and their presence will determine the rejection of the work. In this regard, the journal advises authors to preserve the data associated with a published article, in accordance with institutional and funding requirements, and agreements with research participants. Additionally, in the online submission process, authors must confirm that the work is original, free of plagiarism and that it has not been and will not be submitted to other publications. If the journal detects plagiarism and fabricated or falsified data after the article has been published, the journal will withdraw the article and publish the reasons for this on its online portal. These authors will be blacklisted and banned from publishing in the journal in the future.
- the authors ensure that there are no conflicts of interest, that the organisations funding the research are duly mentioned and that they obtain permission from the copyright holders for the reproduction of images
Editorial status
- Object: Transnational journal of original and unpublished scientific production on the interface between tourism and the arts.
- Objective: To create an international space for critical analysis of the relationships, tensions, representations and possibilities between tourism and all artistic forms.
- Formal framework: The Journal of Tourism & Arts respects the deontological principles of freedom of the press and professional ethics.
